Overview
The Central Market was built by Pierre Bousquet on the site of the 1915 Franco-Moroccan Exhibition; its first phase was opened by Lyautey on 16 May 1919. The low building with its continuous frontage draws on fondouks and the markets of southern Morocco, with shops beneath the arcades of Boulevard Mohammed V. At its centre, a covered rotunda shelters the fishmongers, while zellige fountains and cement mashrabiyas keep it cool and ventilated. It is still a busy market, known for its fish stalls and oysters.
