Current use Courthouse

Listed in the national heritage inventory

Overview

Built between 1920 and 1923 by Joseph Marrast, the Courthouse closes the east side of Place Mohammed V like a stage backdrop. It is reached by a grand staircase and a monumental door beneath a carved stone porch crowned by a frieze of green and blue zellige. On either side, a gallery with painted cedar ceilings runs along planted patios, and the main courtroom is panelled throughout. Marrast's only building in Morocco, it showcases the work of craftsmen in the Neo-Moroccan style. It still houses the courts.
