Overview

Work on the Sacred Heart church began in the early 1930s to designs by Paul Tournon, at the entrance to the Arab League Park; the final phase was only completed in 1953. Built entirely in reinforced concrete, it rises 33 metres beneath the vault and runs some 75 metres long. Its stained glass, set in a concrete lattice with geometric patterns of Arab-Andalusian inspiration, is by Florence Tournon-Branly, Jean Mamez and Louis Barillet, and its bell towers recall minarets. Deconsecrated and handed over to the city in the early 1970s, it now hosts exhibitions and cultural events.
